Day 2: Mark 11:15-18

Monday Day 2 of Holy Week

On the second day of Christ’s final week, we see three events happen:

1. Jesus cursed the fig tree in Mark 11:12-14. The scripture says that on this day, Jesus was hungry and He saw this fig tree and went to see if it had any fruit on it. When He reaches the fig tree, He found no fruit. Jesus looks at the tree and says, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again”. The scripture says that the disciples heard this. It is interesting to note that they did not appear to think anything about what Jesus did or said. However, we will see what happened in my next post

2. The next thing that Jesus did was go to the temple as soon as He entered the city. Upon entering the temple, Jesus began to cast out the people who were selling and buying in the temple as seen in Mark 11:15-19. Why because the temple of the Lord was to be “a house of prayer for all nations” (Mark 11:17). The outer courts in which they were buying and selling was the only place where non-Jewish people or the Gentiles could worship. They were not allowed to go beyond the outer court so if the outer court which is the Gentiles’ only place to freely worship God is full of corruption and animals how would they be able to pray and worship God. In essence, they were not able to worship. This angered Jesus and that is why He did what He did thus fulfilling Malachi 3:1-2

3. Finally, on this 2nd day of the Lord’s final week He speaks about His own death as can be seen in John 12:20-36 in the figure of a grain of wheat that must die and be planted. Before a tree can live a seed must first die and be buried.

This is the end of the 2nd day of the Lord’s final week
