Let not your heart be troubled

A new command I give you: Love one another…

Today Jesus was in Bethany teaching His disciples. He sent Peter & John to Jerusalem to prepare for the Passover meal. In the evening, they came to the Upper Room where He washed their feet (John 13:1-16), as an example. No servant is greater than his master. He then predicts His betrayal by Judas Iscariot. Jesus dipped a piece of bread and gave it to Judas & he took the bread Satan entered into him. Jesus then said to him “That thou doest, do quickly “. The other disciples didn’t understand what Jesus meant. They thought that he was being sent to buy things for the Passover meal or to give to the poor. After Judas, left Jesus then gave a new command in Jn 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another…By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another “. He then tells Peter that before the rooster crows “You will deny me”. Jesus continues to teach the disciples in John 14 by comforting them “Let not your heart be troubled “. Jesus then promises the comfort of the Holy Spirit in vvs 15-29. He promises the comforter, the advocate (the parakletos) will teach all things and remind them of everything that He said to them. Jesus then leads them out of the Upper Room. As they are walking Jesus teaches the disciples about the True Vine and the Branches, how the world will hate them because they hated Him first. A servant is no greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you. This is in fulfillment of Psalm 69:4. He then tells them about the work of the Holy Spirit. In John 17, we see Jesus pray three different prayers. The 1st prayer was for Himself to the Father. Ending with “Father glorify me in your presence with the glory that I had with you before the world began”. The 2nd prayer Jesus prayed was for the disciples. That God would protect them; that they may have the full measure of His joy in them; that God would protect them from the evil one; and that God would sanctify them by the truth of His word. Jesus sanctified Himself that they might be truly sanctified. The 3rd prayer was for all believers. This is the end of Jesus’ teaching of the disciples. #biblestudymoments #holyweek
